Nairobi hosts urgent UN talks on planet in crisis.

Delegates from more than 170 countries are meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, for the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), at a time when climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation and pollution are converging into what experts warn is a global emergency. The assembly is expected to shape solutions to challenges ranging from melting glaciers to rising seaweed blooms and the environmental footprint of emerging technologies.

Nairobi is hosting urgent high-level United Nations talks as more than 170 countries gather for the Seventh Session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), a meeting described as critical for a planet facing multiple, overlapping environmental crises. Delegates are confronting the reality of climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation, pollution, and the rising impact of digital technologies, with experts warning that the world is running out of time to act.

UN Environment Programme Executive Director Inger Andersen called for bold global cooperation, stressing that no nation can address these challenges alone and that a stable climate and healthy ecosystems are essential for economic stability and global equity. Kenyan President William Ruto highlighted Africa’s disproportionate suffering from droughts and failed harvests to destructive floods despite contributing minimally to global emissions. He urged for equitable climate financing and practical solutions that support both environmental protection and economic growth.

Running from 8 to 12 December 2025, UNEA-7 aims to deliver real, implementable solutions. Negotiations include draft resolutions and strategies on issues such as pollution control, glacier protection, biodiversity goals, and the environmental impacts of emerging technologies. Leaders and experts warn that the window for effective intervention is narrowing, and only decisive, collective global action can safeguard the planet for future generations.
