Pope Leo to tour four African countries in first major overseas trip of 2026

VATICAN CITY - Pope Leo will visit four countries across Africa from April 13-23, the Vatican announced on Wednesday, with the pontiff making his first major overseas trip in 2026 to the continent where the Catholic Church is growing fastest.

There was a noticeable shift in the air at the Vatican as Pope Leo confirmed what many had been anticipating his first major overseas trip of 2026 will be to Africa.

The pope will also make a one-day visit on March 28 to Monaco, the microstate on the French Riviera, and will visit Spain from June 6-12, the Vatican said.

In Africa, Leo will visit Algeria, Angola, Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon. He is expected to draw large crowds, urge world leaders to support development on the continent, and highlight efforts at Catholic-Muslim dialogue.

Standing before a gathering of clergy and journalists, the Pope spoke warmly about the continent, describing it as a place of deep faith, resilience, and hope.

The announcement immediately drew applause from those present, signaling just how significant this visit is, not only diplomatically but spiritually.

According to the Vatican, the Holy Father will tour four African nations, marking a major pastoral mission early in the year. While specific dates and a detailed itinerary are yet to be fully disclosed, preparations are already underway.

The visit will include meetings with national leaders, bishops, clergy, and youth representatives, alongside large public Masses expected to draw thousands of worshippers.

The atmosphere following the announcement was one of anticipation.

Africa remains one of the fastest-growing regions for the Catholic Church, and papal visits often serve as moments of reassurance and solidarity.

For many communities facing economic strain, insecurity, and social challenges, the Pope’s presence carries emotional and symbolic weight.

Observers at the Vatican noted that beyond its religious significance, the trip holds diplomatic importance. Papal visits traditionally open doors for dialogue on peacebuilding, development, and humanitarian concerns. In recent years, several African countries have grappled with conflict, displacement, and governance challenges issues the Pope has consistently addressed in his global messages.

This tour will be Pope Leo’s first major international journey of the year, reinforcing Africa’s central place in the Church’s mission. As details continue to emerge, there is a growing sense that the visit will not only strengthen spiritual ties but also spotlight the continent’s role in shaping the future of global Catholicism.

For now, anticipation builds both within the Vatican walls and across Africa as millions prepare to welcome the Holy Father.
