Egypt has released a well-known activist and leading member of the pro-democracy “April 6th” movement that helped spark the country’s 2011 uprising.
According to his lawyer, Sherif Al-Rouby was among several activists freed on Monday, describing the move as “a positive development in… respect for rights and freedoms.”
Authorities also released El-Sayed Moshagheb and Nermin Hussein, both linked to the April 6 movement.
Al-Rouby was first detained in 2016 on charges of spreading false news and terrorism. He has spent most of the past decade in detention.
When President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi re-established the pardons committee four years ago, Al-Rouby was among a number of high-profile detainees released in what authorities described as a gesture toward the opposition.
However, he was rearrested just three months later and remained in pre-trial detention.
The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights has alleged that Al-Rouby suffered medical negligence during his imprisonment.
Egypt has long faced criticism over its human rights record, particularly for the detention of individuals activists describe as political prisoners.
