In Kigali, Rwanda, entrepreneur Kevine Kagirimpundu turned discarded car tires into stylish, eco-friendly footwear. What began as a university project with her friend Ysolde Shimwe became Uzuri K&Y, a brand committed to sustainability and social impact.
Kevine noticed the piles of old tires around Kigali and saw an opportunity to create something beautiful from waste. Together with her team, they carefully collect discarded tires, clean them, and handcraft them into durable sandals. The process combines traditional craftsmanship with modern design, resulting in high-quality footwear.
Beyond environmental sustainability, Uzuri K&Y is dedicated to empowering local communities. The company trains young Rwandans, especially women, in shoe production and entrepreneurship. Over 1,500 people have gained valuable skills and steady employment through their initiatives, with 70% of the workers being women.
Uzuri K&Y has upcycled over 10 metric tons of tire rubber, keeping it out of landfills and reducing pollution. Their work aligns with Rwanda’s environmental policies, such as the 2008 plastic bag ban, and promotes a circular economy.
What started as a small initiative has grown, with Uzuri K&Y now selling shoes in Rwanda and Kenya, and plans for international expansion. Kevine envisions spreading the message of sustainability and African innovation globally.
Kevine’s story shows how entrepreneurship can address both environmental and social issues. By turning waste into wearable art, she’s not just creating shoes—she’s creating jobs, empowering women, and building a more sustainable future for all.
