Vice President Chief Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor is an influential Liberian stateswoman, a committed advocate for gender equality, and a champion of democratic governance. Serving as the Vice President of the Republic of Liberia and former Senior Senator of Bong County, she has dedicated her career to representing the interests, hopes, and aspirations of the Liberian people. Elected as Senator in 2005 and re-elected in 2014, Dr. Taylor earned a resounding mandate, advocating on behalf of her constituents. Her legislative career includes chairing the Women Legislative Caucus of Liberia, the Committee on Education and Public Administration, and holding key positions on committees dedicated to judiciary reform, defense, and governance. Her passionate leadership extends across national boundaries, earning her the reputation of a “Vice President without boundaries,” as her initiatives consistently promote a transparent justice system, accessible healthcare, and expanded opportunities for women in Liberia.
Dr. Taylor’s academic background underscores her commitment to informed and effective leadership. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of Liberia and a Master’s in Banking & Finance from the American Institute of Banking.
Further enhancing her expertise, she obtained an MBA in Finance from Cuttington University and an LLB in Law from the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law. Recognized for her contributions to leadership, she has been awarded two honorary doctorates in Leadership and Governance by St. Clements University College. An alumna of the Gabriel L. Dennis Foreign Service Institute, Dr. Taylor’s formal education has equipped her with the multifaceted skills needed to lead and advocate on behalf of Liberia’s diverse population.
An acclaimed humanitarian and philanthropist, Dr. Taylor has received numerous local and international honors for her service. Among her distinctions are the Nation’s highest honor, Knight Great Dame, and the title of Venerable Chief, awarded by Liberia’s National Traditional Council. Her recognition extends globally, with accolades such as the Pan African Award on Leadership Excellence and multiple honors celebrating her role in advancing women’s rights.
