The New Africa Magazine proudly recognizes Aya Chebbi, a distinguished Tunisian diplomat and Pan-African feminist activist, as one of the Young and Exceptional Africans of 2024.
Born in 1988 in Dahmani, Tunisia, Aya Chebbi rose to prominence during the 2010-2011 Tunisian Revolution, emerging as a powerful voice for democracy. Her unwavering commitment to youth empowerment and gender equality has significantly impacted over one million young people across the African continent.
In November 2018, Aya was appointed as the first African Union Special Envoy on Youth, making history as the youngest senior official in the African Union’s history. During her tenure, she pioneered the concept of intergenerational co-leadership, fostering collaboration between different age groups to drive political and social change.
Aya is the founder of the Nala Feminist Collective, one of Africa’s largest multigenerational alliances of women politicians and activists dedicated to transformative feminist change. Her leadership in this collective has been instrumental in advancing women’s rights and amplifying the voices of African women on global platforms.
Her remarkable contributions have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the 2019 Gates Foundation Campaign Award. In 2020, she was named among Forbes Africa’s 50 Most Powerful Women, further solidifying her influence and impact on the continent.
