Burkina Faso military government dissolves 100 political parties

Burkina Faso's military government dissolved all political parties on Thursday, whose activities had been suspended since the military rulers seized power in 2022.

Burkina Faso has taken another dramatic step under military rule, with the transitional government announcing the dissolution of all political parties across the country.

The decision, taken during a Council of Ministers meeting led by junta leader Captain Ibrahim Traoré, affects more than 100 registered political parties and effectively ends organised political activity nationwide. Authorities say the move is aimed at reducing division, restoring order, and refocusing national efforts on security and rebuilding the state, as the country continues to battle violent insurgency.

While political activities had already been suspended since the 2022 coup, parties were still legally recognised until now. With this new decree, party assets are to be handed over to the state, and fresh regulations are expected to redefine political life during the transition.

The announcement has sparked concern among analysts and civil society groups, who fear it signals a further tightening of civic space and leaves unanswered questions about when and how Burkina Faso will return to democratic rule.
