Former Algerian president Liamine Zeroual dies at 84

Algeria announced three days of national mourning on Sunday after the death of 84-year-old Liamine Zeroual, the former soldier who served as the country's president from 1994 to 1999.

Algiers, March 30, 2026 Liamine Zeroual, Algeria’s former president and a key figure in the country’s modern political history, has died at the age of 84, prompting the government to declare three days of national mourning.

According to the Algerian presidency, Zeroual passed away at a military hospital in Algiers following a prolonged illness. In honor of his legacy, flags across the nation are being flown at half-mast.

Born on July 3, 1941, in Batna, Zeroual rose through the ranks as a soldier in Algeria’s National Liberation Army, the armed wing of the National Liberation Front, which fought to free the country from French colonial rule.

Zeroual emerged as a central figure during one of Algeria’s most turbulent periods the civil conflict of the 1990s. Tasked with leading a transitional government, he played a stabilizing role at a time when the nation was deeply fractured.

In 1995, he oversaw and won Algeria’s first multi-party presidential election, securing a decisive mandate from the people. His leadership was widely seen as a turning point toward political normalization.

However, in a move that surprised many, Zeroual cut short his five-year term in 1998, stepping down voluntarily. His decision paved the way for Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who would go on to lead the country for two decades.

Despite his early exit from office, Zeroual maintained a reputation for integrity and restraint qualities that earned him enduring respect among Algerians.

As the country mourns, many are reflecting on his quiet but impactful leadership during one of its darkest chapters a legacy defined not by power held, but by the stability he helped restore.
