The Ivorian winger has completed a remarkable rise to the top of European football after Real Madrid signed him from RB Leipzig in a deal reportedly worth €125 million upfront, with bonuses potentially taking the total to around €140 million.

The transfer makes Diomandé the most expensive African footballer in history, surpassing the previous record held by Ivorian winger Nicolas Pépé, whose 2019 move from Lille to Arsenal was worth around €80 million. (L’Équipe)

More remarkably, Diomandé’s journey to the Santiago Bernabéu has happened at extraordinary speed.

From Abidjan to Real Madrid

Born in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, Diomandé developed his football in the United States before making the move into professional European football.

He joined Spanish club Leganés shortly after turning 18 and made his first-team debut in 2025. His stay in Spain was brief, however, as RB Leipzig moved quickly to secure the young winger for approximately €20 million.

Just one season later, his value had multiplied dramatically.

At Leipzig during the 2025/26 campaign, Diomandé established himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young attackers. He recorded 13 goals and 10 assists in 36 appearances across all competitions, while also earning the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award. (Bundesliga)

His performances attracted interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain. But it was Real Madrid that ultimately won the race for his signature.

A record-breaking move

Real Madrid have committed Diomandé to a seven-year contract running until 2033, placing enormous faith in the teenager’s potential.

The deal could rise to approximately €140 million if performance-related bonuses are achieved. That would make the Ivorian not only Africa’s most expensive player but also one of the most expensive signings in Real Madrid’s history. (Reuters)

The transfer also represents a major milestone for African football.

Diomandé’s record surpasses the previous African transfer benchmark set by fellow Ivorian Nicolas Pépé. Other African stars including Victor Osimhen, Omar Marmoush and Bryan Mbeumo have also commanded major transfer fees in recent years, reflecting the growing value European clubs place on African talent. More than a transfer fee

Behind the record-breaking price tag is a teenager who has experienced an unusually rapid rise.

According to those who knew him during his development, football has always been central to Diomandé’s ambitions. His journey has also highlighted some of the challenges young African players can face as agents, representatives and clubs compete for control of promising talents.

At only 19, Diomandé now finds himself wearing the famous Real Madrid shirt and playing alongside some of the biggest stars in world football.

His story is a reminder of the enormous talent emerging from Africa and of how quickly a young player’s career can change when opportunity meets ability.
