Zimbabwe launches new bank notes aimed at boosting confidence in local currency

Zimbabwe launched its upgraded banknotes on Tuesday with an appeal to national pride and confidence.

Zimbabwe has officially launched a new series of upgraded banknotes, in a move aimed at strengthening public confidence in its local currency and reviving national pride.

The newly introduced BiG5 series, unveiled on Tuesday, features some of the country’s most iconic wildlife a symbolic nod to Zimbabwe’s natural heritage and a message of resilience. Authorities say the design is intended to reconnect citizens with their currency at a time when trust has long been fragile.

The rollout begins with 10, 20, and 50 Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) notes, while higher denominations are expected to be introduced later, depending on economic demand and prevailing monetary conditions.

For years, many Zimbabweans have preferred using more stable foreign currencies such as the US dollar and the South African rand, driven by repeated episodes of inflation and currency instability.

The government hopes this new phase of banknotes will help reverse that trend.
The upgraded notes are part of broader monetary reforms introduced in 2024, when the Zimbabwean dollar was replaced with the gold-backed Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG).

The ZiG currency was designed to provide a more stable and reliable store of value, anchored by gold reserves to prevent the sharp depreciation that plagued previous currencies.

Officials say the new notes will be widely accessible, becoming available through banks, ATMs, and cash-back services at retail outlets across the country.

Meanwhile, existing ZiG banknotes will continue to circulate indefinitely alongside the new series, a measure intended to ensure a smooth transition and avoid confusion among the public.

The success of the new currency design will ultimately depend on whether it can rebuild trust among citizens a challenge that has historically proven difficult but remains central to Zimbabwe’s economic recovery efforts.
