Anthony Joshua Injured in Ogun State Car Crash That Claims Two Lives.

Anthony Joshua was involved in a car accident in Nigeria that resulted in the deaths of two passengers, but he is reported to be in stable condition with minor injuries.

British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua has been injured in a serious car accident in Nigeria’s Ogun State, an incident that tragically claimed the lives of two passengers and has drawn widespread attention across the sporting world. The crash occurred on Monday, 29 December 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, one of the country’s busiest highways connecting Lagos to several southwestern states.

According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and local police authorities, the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua was travelling at high speed when it lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and collided with a stationary truck parked by the roadside. Preliminary findings by road safety officials point to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking as major factors responsible for the crash.

Joshua, 36, who was seated in the back of the vehicle at the time of the collision, was rescued from the wreckage and rushed to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation. Officials from Ogun and Lagos states confirmed that the former heavyweight champion sustained minor injuries and is currently in a stable condition, with no life-threatening trauma reported after medical assessments. A joint statement by authorities indicated that both Joshua and another injured occupant were stable and did not require emergency intervention, although they remain under medical observation.

Tragically, two other occupants of the vehicle close friends and key members of Joshua’s team died at the scene of the accident. Promoter Matchroom Boxing identified the deceased as Sina Ghami, a strength and conditioning coach, and Latif “Lateef” Ayodele, Joshua’s personal trainer and long-time associate. The governments of Lagos and Ogun states extended condolences to the families of the victims, assuring the public that a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing.
Eyewitnesses at the scene and video footage circulating online captured the aftermath of the collision, showing the badly damaged vehicle and a visibly shaken Joshua being assisted away from the wreckage. Some clips showed the boxer wincing in pain as he was helped to safety, moments that have since sparked widespread concern and sympathy from fans around the world.

The incident has also prompted reactions from fellow athletes and members of the global boxing community. Joshua’s recent opponent, Jake Paul, expressed his condolences on social media, saying he was “praying for the lost lives, AJ and everyone affected by today’s unfortunate accident,” adding that life is ultimately more important than boxing.

Joshua was in Nigeria following his knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami on 19 December 2025, a fight that marked his return to the ring after a lengthy absence. The former unified heavyweight champion has been linked to potential future bouts, including a highly anticipated showdown with fellow British boxer Tyson Fury in 2026.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has long been associated with frequent traffic accidents, prompting renewed calls for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations. Authorities say investigations into the crash are continuing, while also urging motorists to adhere to speed limits and safe driving practices to prevent similar tragedies. Police officials once again extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the dangers on Nigeria’s highways.
