Ethiopia does not want war: PM

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has said his country does not want war, even as regional Tigray authorities say federal forces are massing around the northern region, raising fears of renewed conflict.

The Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, has stated that his country does not want war, amid rising tensions with neighboring Eritrea.

Speaking before lawmakers in Ethiopia’s parliament, Abiy stressed that Ethiopia is committed to peaceful dialogue and cooperation, despite increasing political and military tensions in the Horn of Africa.

He noted that Ethiopia would prefer resolving disagreements through diplomacy rather than conflict.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged that the relationship between Ethiopia and Eritrea has become strained in recent months.

However, he insisted that Ethiopia’s priority remains peace and stability in the region.

Abiy emphasized that Ethiopia has no intention of initiating war, adding that the government continues to pursue diplomatic engagement with neighbouring countries to prevent further escalation.

At the same time, he warned that while Ethiopia seeks peace, the country is also prepared to defend itself if necessary. According to him, Ethiopia will continue strengthening its national defence to ensure its sovereignty and security.

Tensions between the two countries have raised concerns among observers and regional analysts, especially given the fragile stability in the Horn of Africa following previous conflicts in the region.

Abiy’s remarks were therefore seen as an attempt to ease fears of another potential conflict, while reaffirming Ethiopia’s position that dialogue should remain the primary path to resolving disputes.
