The armed forces of Niger have repelled an attempted attack on a military drone base located in the Tahoua region, authorities confirmed on Sunday, highlighting the ongoing security challenges facing the country.
According to a statement from the Nigerien army, armed assailants attempted to storm the drone base situated near the city of Tahoua. Soldiers stationed at the facility quickly responded to the assault, engaging the attackers in a firefight and successfully forcing them to retreat.
Military officials said the attackers were repelled before they could cause significant damage to the installation, which plays a strategic role in surveillance and counter-insurgency operations in the region. Security forces reportedly neutralized several of the assailants during the confrontation, although authorities did not immediately provide an exact casualty figure.
Following the attack, the army said it secured the base and surrounding areas while launching additional operations to track down the remaining militants who fled the scene.
The Tahoua region lies in a volatile part of Niger that has been affected by insurgent violence linked to extremist groups operating across the Sahel, particularly those affiliated with Islamic State and Al‑Qaeda. Armed groups have frequently targeted military positions, security forces and civilians in Niger as well as neighbouring Mali and Burkina Faso.
Drone bases are considered critical infrastructure for Niger’s military because they are used for aerial surveillance, intelligence gathering and monitoring militant movements across remote desert areas where insurgent groups often operate.
The attack comes at a time when Niger’s military government is facing increasing pressure to improve security across the country following the 2023 coup that brought the junta to power.
Since then, authorities have repeatedly pledged to strengthen military operations and reclaim territories affected by extremist activity.
Analysts say the attempted assault on the Tahoua drone facility underscores the persistent threat posed by militant groups in the Sahel, despite ongoing military efforts to contain the insurgency.
For now, the Nigerien army says it remains on high alert, with security forces continuing patrols and search operations in the area to prevent further attacks and ensure the protection of strategic military installations.
