Guinea cracks down on suspected GSIM networks

Guinean authorities have dismantled a suspected terrorist network linked to the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM), arresting multiple foreign and Guinean nationals as part of a nationwide anti-terror operation.

Authorities in Guinea have dismantled a suspected terrorist network linked to the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM), arresting multiple foreign and Guinean nationals in a nationwide anti-terror operation.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Conakry announced the arrest and indictment of eleven individuals in April 2025. Those detained include seven nationals from Mali, two from Niger, one from Burkina Faso, and one Guinean.

In a related development, another Malian national, Fotigui Daou, was arrested for alleged membership in a dormant GSIM cell. He reportedly admitted involvement in a hostage-for-ransom operation, contributing to terrorist financing.

Two Guinean nationals, Ibrahima Sow and Cheick Ibrahima Savane, were also detained for their alleged active roles in online radicalisation networks.

All suspects are facing charges including complicity in terrorism, criminal association, and financing terrorism.

Online networks
Investigations revealed the existence of several GSIM-affiliated WhatsApp groups with more than 500 members, including at least 38 Guineans. Authorities say the groups were used to radicalise individuals and coordinate activities.

Regional context
The arrests come amid rising jihadist activity across the Sahel region, particularly in southern Mali near Guinea’s border, where extremist groups linked to Al-Qaeda have intensified operations.

Government statement
The Prosecutor’s Office emphasized that the government remains fully mobilised to protect citizens, urging the public to stay vigilant, cooperate with security agencies, and report any suspicious activity.
It added that the fight against terrorism remains an “absolute national priority.”
