Seven NUJ Members, NTA Staff Killed in Gombe Road Crash

Gombe State woke up to deep sorrow following a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of seven journalists and media professionals, leaving the Nigerian media community in mourning.

The fatal crash occurred along the Gombe-Yola axis near Kumo as a bus conveying members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and staff of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) was involved in a devastating accident. The journalists were reportedly returning from the wedding ceremony of a colleague, a journey meant to celebrate love and togetherness, but one that ended in heartbreak.

Preliminary reports indicate that a tyre burst caused the vehicle to lose control, leading to the crash. Seven occupants were confirmed dead at the scene, while others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical attention.

Those who lost their lives were seasoned professionals who dedicated years to informing the public and strengthening democracy through journalism. Among the deceased were senior NTA officials, media editors, and support staff whose contributions to broadcasting and public communication in Gombe State will not be forgotten.

Emergency responders, including officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), acted swiftly to rescue survivors and recover the bodies. The Gombe State Government, NUJ leadership, media houses, and civil society organizations have all expressed profound grief, offering condolences to the families of the victims and prayers for the injured.

As tributes continue to pour in from across Nigeria, this tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the risks faced daily by journalists, not only in conflict zones, but even on ordinary roads while carrying out their professional and personal duties.

Today, Gombe mourns. Nigeria mourns. And the media community stands united in grief, honoring the lives of colleagues who left too soon, but whose voices and service will forever echo in the hearts of many.

May their souls rest in perfect peace, and may their families find comfort and strength in this difficult time.
