Social media platforms in Gabon have been suspended “until further notice,” the country’s media regulator announced on Tuesday.
The High Authority for Communication (HAC) said the decision was taken in response to what it described as the spread of “defamatory, hateful and insulting content” online, which it believes is fueling division and conflict within society.
According to the regulator, the measure is aimed at curbing the circulation of false information, cyberbullying and the unauthorised disclosure of personal data.
Authorities argue that such online activities undermine state institutions and threaten democratic progress.
The HAC did not specify which social media platforms are affected by the suspension.
Despite the move, the regulator stressed that freedom of expression, including the right to comment and criticise, remains a fundamental right guaranteed under Gabonese law.
The announcement comes against a backdrop of growing social tensions in the country.
Teachers have been on strike since December overpay and working conditions, with protests reportedly spreading to other sectors including health, higher education and public broadcasting.
