Spain Edge Argentina to Win Second FIFA World Cup Title

Substitute Ferran Torres scores dramatic extra-time winner as Spain dethrone defending champions Argentina to lift the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey Spain have been crowned 2026 FIFA World Cup champions after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 in a tense extra-time final at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, securing the country’s second world title and ending Argentina’s reign as champions.

The decisive moment came in the 106th minute when substitute Ferran Torres reacted quickest to a loose ball in the penalty area, firing home from close range after good work by fellow substitute Nico Williams and defender Pedro Porro. The goal proved enough to separate two of world football’s biggest nations after more than 100 minutes of deadlock.

Spain controlled possession for much of the contest, but found it difficult to break down Argentina’s disciplined defence. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez produced a series of impressive saves to keep the South Americans in the match, but his resistance was finally broken in extra time.

Argentina’s hopes of defending the trophy suffered a major setback in stoppage time of normal play when midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, forcing Lionel Scaloni’s side to play the remainder of the final with ten men.

For Lionel Messi, the defeat marked a heartbreaking end to what is widely expected to be his final FIFA World Cup appearance. The 39-year-old captain was unable to inspire another memorable triumph as Argentina struggled to create meaningful attacking opportunities throughout the match. In fact, Argentina failed to register a shot during regulation time, a first in a World Cup final.

Spain’s victory capped an outstanding tournament under head coach Luis de la Fuente, whose young and disciplined side combined defensive solidity with tactical maturity. Having already guided Spain to the UEFA Euro 2024 title, De la Fuente added the World Cup to his growing list of achievements, extending Spain’s impressive unbeaten run on the international stage.

Several individual honours also went Spain’s way. Midfield general Rodri was named the tournament’s Golden Ball winner for his outstanding performances, while goalkeeper Unai Simón received the Golden Glove award after helping Spain concede just one goal throughout the competition. Young defender Pau Cubarsí was recognised as the tournament’s Best Young Player, while France’s Kylian Mbappé finished as the Golden Boot winner with 10 goals.

Spain’s triumph adds a second FIFA World Cup trophy to the title they won in 2010, further cementing the country’s place among football’s elite. For Argentina, the defeat ends their hopes of becoming the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup crown.
