Cameroon’s National Assembly gets new leader after 34 Years

Cameroon's National Assembly elected Théodore Datouo as its new president on Tuesday, ending the 34-year tenure of Cavaye Yeguié Djibril, who had led the lower house of parliament since 1992

Cameroon’s National Assembly has elected Théodore Datouo as its new president, bringing an end to the 34-year leadership of Cavaye Yeguié Djibril, who had presided over the lower house since 1992.

Datouo, a lawmaker representing Bangou in the Western Region and until now vice president of the Assembly, was selected by the Central Committee of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (RDPC) to succeed the long-serving parliamentary head.

Djibril, who represented the Mayo-Sava constituency in the Far North Region, had held the position since the return of multiparty politics in the early 1990s making him one of the longest-serving parliamentary leaders on the continent.

Datouo now steps into leadership at a time many are watching closely.

He previously oversaw the construction of the National Assembly’s new headquarters, popularly known as the “Paul Biya Glass Palace,” a project seen as both a symbol of modernization and political continuity.

His emergence signals a notable shift in Cameroon’s political landscape. However, analysts say it still reflects continuity within the ruling party’s structure, rather than a complete break from the past.

Reactions to the leadership change have been cautiously optimistic.

Civil society voices have described it as “an important turning point” in Cameroon’s political journey. Among them, Nkongho Felix Agbor noted on social media that the transition will serve as a “test for the credibility, independence and real role of our Parliament.”

Attention is also beginning to shift toward the Senate, where Marcel Niat Njifenji has held leadership for several years, sparking speculation about whether a similar transition could follow.
