ECOWAS lifts all sanctions against Guinea

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has lifted all remaining sanctions imposed on Guinea, marking a major step in the country’s return to regional diplomatic and political life after years of isolation.
The decision follows Guinea’s completion of key milestones in its political transition, including a constitutional referendum held in September 2025 and a presidential election in December 2025. ECOWAS said these developments paved the way for the full restoration of constitutional order, prompting the regional bloc to lift all residual sanctions with immediate effect.

Guinea had been under ECOWAS sanctions since the September 2021 military coup that ousted former president Alpha Condé and brought General Mamady Doumbouya to power. The measures included travel bans and financial restrictions targeting members of the junta and associated individuals. While some sanctions were eased in early 2024, others remained in place until the latest decision.

With the sanctions lifted, Guinea is now fully reintegrated into ECOWAS institutions and decision-making bodies. The bloc also congratulated President Doumbouya on his election and recent inauguration, which was attended by regional leaders and supporters.

Despite the diplomatic breakthrough, Guinea’s political transition has been closely watched amid concerns over civil liberties. Since the coup, the country has experienced restrictions on protests and the arrest or exile of opposition figures, issues that have drawn criticism from rights groups.

ECOWAS urged the Guinean authorities to build on the progress made by promoting national unity, social cohesion, and inclusive development, as the country moves forward after years of political uncertainty.
