French ambassador says South Africa should attend all G20 summits

It was a controversial move from Donald Trump : the US president barred South Africa from attending the G20 summit at his Miami area club.

Tensions around global diplomacy have surfaced after South Africa was excluded from key international meetings, drawing mixed reactions from world leaders and diplomats.

Reports indicate that Donald Trump barred South Africa from attending a recent G20-related gathering hosted at his Miami-area club, a move that has sparked controversy and raised questions about the country’s role in global forums.

The situation was further compounded when South Africa was not invited to participate in the G7 summit hosted by France in June. The decision triggered debate over whether geopolitical pressures are influencing participation in major international platforms.

However, France has pushed back against suggestions of exclusion at the G20 level. Speaking on the matter, French ambassador to South Africa, David Martinon, reaffirmed that South Africa remains a legitimate member of the G20.

According to Martinon, France considers South Africa a “full-fledged member” of the G20 and believes it should be included in all related meetings. On the issue of the G7 invitation, he referenced remarks made by Cyril Ramaphosa, who reportedly noted that a country cannot be “de-invited” from a forum it does not formally belong to.

France also denied claims that its decision-making was influenced by pressure from Washington, stating that its invitation choices were independent. The country explained that Kenya was invited to the G7 summit as part of its own diplomatic considerations for that particular meeting.

The developments highlight ongoing shifts and sensitivities in global alliances, as emerging economies like South Africa navigate their positions within major international forums such as the G20 and G7.
