Dangote Refinery Becomes Europe’s Largest External Supplier of Jet Fuel
A record 466,000 metric tonnes of aviation fuel exported to Europe in June propelled Nigeria's Dangote Petroleum Refinery ahead of the United States, underscoring the growing global influence of Africa's largest refinery.

Nigeria’s Dangote Petroleum Refinery exported a record 466,000 metric tonnes of aviation fuel to Europe in June, surpassing the United States and reinforcing Africa’s growing role in the global energy market.
LAGOS, Nigeria, The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has emerged as Europe’s largest external supplier of jet fuel, marking a significant milestone for Nigeria’s refining industry and strengthening Africa’s position in the global energy market.

According to recent shipping and trade data, Nigeria exported approximately 466,000 metric tonnes of aviation fuel to Europe in June, the highest monthly export volume since the 650,000-barrel-per-day Dangote Refinery began operations in 2024. The exports enabled the refinery to overtake the United States, whose jet fuel shipments to Europe declined sharply during the same period.
Industry analysts say the achievement reflects the refinery’s rapidly growing production capacity and its increasing influence on international fuel markets. The surge in exports also comes at a time when European demand for imported aviation fuel remains strong as air travel continues to recover.

The refinery, located in the Lekki Free Zone in Lagos State, has steadily increased production since commencing operations, supplying refined petroleum products to both domestic and international markets. Its growing export volumes are helping reduce Africa’s dependence on imported refined fuels while positioning Nigeria as a major player in global energy trade.
Market observers noted that the influx of Nigerian jet fuel contributed to increased supply in Europe, placing downward pressure on regional aviation fuel prices during June. At the same time, exports from the United States fell significantly, allowing Dangote Refinery to become Europe’s leading external supplier for the month.

The development marks another milestone for Aliko Dangote’s flagship industrial project, which was established to transform Nigeria from a major importer of refined petroleum products into a leading refining and export hub.
With a refining capacity of 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day, the Dangote Refinery is the largest single-train refinery in Africa and one of the largest in the world. Since commencing operations, it has expanded production of petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and other petroleum products to serve markets across Africa, Europe and beyond.
The company has also signalled plans to further expand its refining operations and fuel exports, aligning with its broader ambition to strengthen Africa’s energy security and increase the continent’s participation in global fuel supply chains.
Energy experts say the refinery’s growing export footprint demonstrates the economic potential of large-scale industrial investments in Africa. Beyond increasing export earnings, the project is expected to create jobs, support local industries and reduce the region’s long-standing reliance on imported refined petroleum products.
As global demand for aviation fuel continues to grow, analysts believe Dangote Refinery is well positioned to play an increasingly important role in supplying international markets while reinforcing Nigeria’s status as one of Africa’s leading energy producers.
The refinery’s latest achievement is also being viewed as a significant boost for Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector, highlighting the country’s capacity to compete with established global refining centres and contribute meaningfully to international energy markets.
