Ethiopia Advances Trade Liberalization to Strengthen Regional Integration: Ministry

Border trade is vital for the economic resilience and social cohesion of communities living along Ethiopia’s borders.

ADDIS ABABA, March 25 (ENA) Ethiopia is advancing trade liberalization efforts as part of its broader economic reform agenda aimed at strengthening regional integration and boosting economic growth.
The Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration said the country’s Homegrown Economic Reform Programme prioritizes opening up the economy to enhance trade and investment.

Speaking at the launch of a cross-border trade facilitation training manual in Addis Ababa, Advisor to the State Minister, Tsegaw Chernet, noted that the reforms are creating opportunities for domestic businesses while improving Ethiopia’s participation in regional markets.

He emphasized that cross-border trade plays a vital role in driving economic growth, creating jobs, and improving livelihoods, particularly for communities in border areas.

The newly introduced training manual aims to support small-scale traders by simplifying trade procedures, enhancing compliance, and addressing information gaps that often hinder participation in formal trade systems.

The African Union Commission highlighted the importance of facilitating the movement of people across borders, noting that it can significantly boost trade, promote labor mobility, and expand employment opportunities across Africa.

Development partners also stressed the need for improved infrastructure and governance systems, including digital border management and one-stop border posts, to deepen regional integration.
These efforts align with continental initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

Ethiopia has already taken steps to formalize cross-border trade through agreements with neighboring countries, including Djibouti, Sudan, and South Sudan, with additional arrangements under consideration with Kenya.

The government said the overall objective is to build a more competitive, inclusive, and interconnected economy that strengthens Ethiopia’s position in regional and global trade.
