Sixteen-year-old Osasere Okundaye has made history after becoming Nigeria’s youngest chartered accountant, a milestone that has earned her nationwide recognition and praise from government officials and the accounting profession.

The teenager achieved the feat after successfully qualifying through the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), surpassing the previous national record set in 2022 by Jonathan Adewale, who became a chartered accountant at the age of 17.

Reacting to the achievement, the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, described Okundaye’s success as a reflection of the determination, discipline and resilience that many young Nigerians possess.

In a statement released on Monday, the minister congratulated the 16-year-old, saying her accomplishment demonstrates what can be achieved through dedication and hard work.

“Osasere has distinguished herself as a shining example of the limitless potential of Nigerian youth,” Olawande said. “Her accomplishment reminds us that with determination, dedication and the right support, young Nigerians can break barriers, set new records and inspire a generation to dream bigger and strive for excellence.”

He noted that her achievement should serve as an inspiration to young people across the country, encouraging them to pursue excellence regardless of their age or background.

Olawande also acknowledged the role played by Okundaye’s parents, teachers and mentors, describing their guidance and support as an important part of her success story.

“I also congratulate her parents, family, teachers, mentors and everyone who has supported and guided her journey. Their encouragement, sacrifices and belief in her abilities have undoubtedly contributed to this exceptional success,” he said.

The minister reaffirmed the Federal Ministry of Youth Development’s commitment to empowering young Nigerians through programmes and policies designed to help them develop their talents and realise their full potential.

He added that Okundaye’s record-breaking achievement reinforces confidence in Nigeria’s young people and the country’s future.

“Osasere’s achievement reinforces our confidence that the future of Nigeria is bright in the hands of focused, determined and talented young citizens,” he said.

Chartered accountancy is regarded as one of Nigeria’s most demanding professional qualifications, requiring candidates to complete a series of rigorous examinations and demonstrate competence in accounting, auditing, taxation, financial reporting and business management.

Professionals in the accounting sector say Okundaye’s accomplishment is a remarkable example of academic excellence and perseverance. They believe her success will inspire more young Nigerians to pursue professional careers and contribute to the country’s economic development.

As congratulatory messages continue to pour in from across the country, Osasere Okundaye’s achievement is being celebrated as a symbol of the immense potential of Nigeria’s youth and the impact of investing in education, mentorship and talent development.
