Cubans relieved as Russian oil tanker arrives amid deepening energy crisis
Cubans were relieved on Tuesday after a Russian tanker docked at the Cuban port of Matanzas carrying about 730,000 barrels of oil, marking the first such delivery to the island in nearly three months.

The vessel, Anatoly Kolodkin, was allowed to proceed by the administration of Donald Trump despite an ongoing U.S. energy blockade on Cuba, with officials saying the decision was made on humanitarian grounds.

Cubans, including Energy and Mines Minister Vicente de la O Levy, welcomed the arrival of the ship as a much-needed relief for the country’s worsening fuel shortage. The crisis has intensified economic hardship, leaving many citizens facing prolonged blackouts, as well as shortages of food and medicine.

Cuba currently produces only about 40 percent of the fuel it requires and depends heavily on imports to sustain its energy grid. Experts estimate that the shipment could generate roughly 180,000 barrels of diesel, enough to meet national demand for about nine to ten days.

Residents also expressed relief. Camilo Galves, a Matanzas resident who watched the ship dock, described the moment as a source of hope amid ongoing hardship, saying it showed that Cuba is “not alone in the world.”
Cuba had previously relied heavily on oil imports from Venezuela, but those supplies were disrupted following U.S. actions against the South American country earlier this year. Mexico also halted shipments after Washington warned of potential tariffs on countries supplying oil to the island.

Despite the blockade, President Trump said earlier that he had “no problem” with a Russian tanker delivering oil to Cuba, acknowledging the urgent needs of the Cuban people.

For many citizens, the arrival of the tanker represents a rare moment of relief. Yania Beatriz Martínez noted that support from other parts of the world is helping to ease the difficult conditions facing the country.

While the shipment is expected to provide only temporary relief, it underscores Cuba’s continued reliance on foreign fuel supplies and the severity of its ongoing energy crisis.
