Among the standout performances was the Innovation Team from Ahmadu Bello University, whose project attracted widespread attention during the competition. The students developed a solar-powered diagnostic device that uses Huawei’s Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cloud and Ascend technologies to detect malaria and intestinal parasites in less than three minutes without requiring internet connectivity.

The innovation is designed to improve access to healthcare, particularly in underserved and remote communities where internet access and laboratory facilities are limited. Observers described the project as an example of how African technology solutions can address local health challenges while meeting global standards of innovation.

The students were later received and congratulated by Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, who praised their achievements and described them as a reflection of the country’s growing digital capacity.

According to the minister, the students’ success demonstrates the impact of strategic investments in digital education and innovation, while showcasing the immense potential of young Nigerians to compete internationally and develop practical solutions to real-world problems.

He noted that the achievements align with the Federal Government’s vision of building a technology-driven economy powered by innovation, digital skills and entrepreneurship.

Industry experts say Nigeria’s performance at the competition highlights the increasing quality of technology education across the country’s universities and reinforces the importance of partnerships between academic institutions and the private sector in preparing young people for the future digital economy.

The Huawei Global ICT Competition is one of the world’s leading technology contests for university students, bringing together participants from dozens of countries to compete in networking, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and digital innovation.

For Nigeria, this year’s success represents more than a collection of international awards. It reflects the country’s growing role in Africa’s digital transformation and demonstrates that its young innovators are increasingly developing technologies capable of solving both local and global challenges.
